CEO Killer Pleads Guilty in Federal Court

Luigi Mangione, 28, pleaded guilty on Friday to federal stalking charges in Manhattan federal court related to the December 4, 2024, killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione admitted to ambushing Thompson outside a New York City hotel as the executive headed to his company's investor conference.

Surveillance footage revealed a masked assailant, with ammunition bearing messages that echoed insurer practices of delaying or denying claims. Authorities noted Mangione's private writings also criticized health insurers. This plea could preempt the state murder trial slated for next month, though prosecutors objected to this outcome.

Mangione, who was not a UnitedHealthcare customer, was arrested five days after the shooting in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The federal stalking charge carries a potential life sentence, similar to the state charges. A federal judge previously dismissed charges that could have led to the death penalty. The defense had explored a psychiatric defense in the state case, but it is not permissible in federal court.
