1 Aug
Summary
- Couple bought cemetery plots two decades ago.
- City discovered plots may already contain human remains.
- Couple ultimately received a full $1,800 refund.

In 2006, Sue and James Artiga purchased two burial plots at Woodlawn Cemetery in Tampa, Florida. Years later, after moving away, they decided to sell the plots to fund other end-of-life arrangements. However, the City of Tampa, which had acquired the cemetery, informed them that a probe suggested the plots might already contain human remains.
Initially, the city offered the couple two new plots but refused to refund the original $1,800 payment. This caused considerable distress, especially as Mr. Artiga was battling cancer. After persistent communication, a city representative contacted Sue Artiga, informing her that a $1,800 check was being issued. She expressed surprise, having been told previously that no refund was possible. The city stated they were pleased to accommodate the couple.
