Burial Blunders: More Families Report Cemetery Mix-Ups
8 Oct
Summary
- Multiple families claim cemetery burial plot mix-ups.
- Some families discovered strangers in purchased plots.
- Previous consumer complaints filed against the cemetery.
Multiple families in Wake County have reported experiencing burial plot mix-ups at Montlawn Memorial Park, following an initial report about a similar incident. These families, who connected through social media and email, discovered strangers buried in plots they had purchased, causing significant emotional distress.
One family learned that their deceased father could not be buried in a pre-purchased family plot because someone else was already interred there. Another family discovered someone was buried in one of their four jointly purchased plots, preventing their intended family burial arrangement.
Records from the North Carolina Attorney General's office show eight consumer complaints against Montlawn since 2020. While most complaints involved billing issues and marker mistakes, the recent reports indicate more serious errors concerning actual burials.
These incidents add to a history of operational concerns at the cemetery, including past claims of double-selling plots and other consumer grievances documented in previous WRAL reporting.
