5 Sep
Summary
- CBI now investigates a 2020 charas seizure case in Udham Singh Nagar.
- Court cited police conduct raising doubts about impartial investigation.
- Allegations include false implication and fabrication of evidence.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has assumed control of a 2020 case concerning the alleged seizure of 97.70g of charas in Udham Singh Nagar. This development follows an order from the Uttarakhand High Court. The court expressed concerns that the police's actions created reasonable doubts about their capacity for an impartial investigation.
The case originated on July 28, 2020, when police registered an FIR against dhaba owner Anil Sharma. Police claimed to have found charas, but Sharma alleged that he was assaulted and falsely implicated, with evidence being staged at a police outpost. Allegations also include the deletion of CCTV footage from his dhaba.
A preliminary inquiry by the CBI has indeed raised questions regarding the initial police investigation. The inquiry indicated, prima facie, that Sharma might have been falsely implicated. It also suggested that evidence may have been fabricated, leading to the transfer of the probe to the CBI for a thorough and unbiased investigation into all aspects of the matter.
