A man with a history of catalytic converter theft convictions was arrested on August 29 while allegedly in the process of stealing catalytic converters. Shawn Eric Clement, 40, faces new charges in Dodge County.
Clement had previously been convicted for stealing at least $30,000 worth of catalytic converters in 2021 and for other thefts. He was sentenced to 23 months at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud in March 2023.
Law enforcement initiated an investigation into the theft of four to six catalytic converters from L&D Recycling. The business owner had placed air tags in some converters, which led investigators to a residence known to belong to Clement.
Upon approaching the residence, investigators observed Clement cutting the stolen catalytic converters in his garage. Following Clement's removal from the property, investigators found metal pieces, copper wire, and scrap material indicative of catalytic converter theft.
Clement reportedly claimed he found the converters in a ditch. He is scheduled to appear in court on September 9.
