Cat Scares Burglar Away, Saves Owner's Belongings

A would-be burglar experienced a surprising and fearful encounter with a pet cat, leading him to abandon his crime and flee a Widnes property empty-handed. Callum Quirk, 27, had unlawfully entered a house on McClellan Place via a ground-floor window on September 9. While the homeowner desperately called emergency services from a hiding place, her cat, Nexi, emerged and confronted Quirk in the hallway.

Startled by the feline, Quirk immediately fled the premises without taking any items. Detective Constable Stuart Beswick commended Nexi's bravery, stating the cat's actions prevented a terrifying confrontation for the victim and secured her property. Nexi, a 13-year-old rescue cat, was adopted by the victim when she was one year old in Dubai.

Following the incident, Cheshire Police utilized CCTV footage and forensic evidence from the scene to identify and apprehend Quirk. Although he initially denied the burglary, DNA from a discarded can at the scene and trainers matching those seen in CCTV footage at the crime scene ultimately led to his arrest. He has since been jailed for 35 months after admitting to the burglary at Chester Crown Court.
