Summary
- Carer jailed for yelling abuse at 81-year-old with dementia.
- Victim's daughter appeals sentence, calling it too lenient.
- Carer drank vodka and trashed the victim's home.

Louise Harris, a 42-year-old carer, received a three-month jail sentence for abusing an 81-year-old woman with dementia. The abuse, captured on camera in the victim's home in Pontardawe, Neath Port Talbot, included yelling threats and demanding money. Harris, who had been a trusted former neighbor, became intoxicated after finding vodka in the refrigerator.
The victim's daughter, Tracy Faram Shipton, believes the sentence is unduly lenient and has filed an appeal. She detailed her mother's fragile state, having recently been hospitalized and grieving her husband's death. The incident occurred during Harris's first trial shift providing care while a social services package was pending.
During the incident, Harris also trashed the property, ripping up knitting that was important to the victim's recovery. The court heard Harris had a history of recovering alcoholism. The abuse has left the victim traumatized, experiencing flashbacks and refusing to wear her emergency alarm.
Judge Rees described Harris as "heartless and cruel" with a "callous disregard" for the victim's welfare. Harris pleaded guilty to ill-treatment of a care worker and criminal damage. The daughter is advocating for cameras in all homes receiving care services.
