Summary
- A care worker struck an elderly man with a shoe in 2022.
- The perpetrator received 100 hours of community service.
- The victim's daughter advocates for harsher penalties for elder abuse.
An elderly man, Mick Griffiths, was subjected to abuse at Woodside Nursing Home in 2022 when a care worker struck him on the head with a shoe. The attack was captured on a six-second video, which showed the care worker hitting Mr. Griffiths while he attempted to shield himself. His daughter, Brenda Brereton, who had initially chosen the home for its warm atmosphere and even worked there, was horrified by the incident.
The care worker later admitted to ill-treating or neglecting a vulnerable person. The victim's family hoped for a significant punishment, especially after a judge initially warned the defendant about potential imprisonment. However, at the sentencing hearing in July 2025, the care worker received a sentence of 100 hours of community service and was ordered to pay £85 in prosecution costs.
Ms. Brereton voiced strong dissatisfaction with the sentence, deeming it insufficient and lacking any deterrent effect. She argued that such lenient penalties encourage further abuse, as offenders might perceive consequences as merely a 'slap on the wrist.' She is now advocating for sentencing that more accurately reflects the severity of abusing vulnerable individuals who are unable to speak out.
DMP Healthcare, the owner of Woodside Nursing Home, stated that the incident was treated with the utmost seriousness. The staff member was immediately suspended and subsequently dismissed for gross misconduct. The company emphasized its commitment to resident safety, dignity, and wellbeing, and confirmed a review of safeguarding arrangements had been conducted.
