Canal Path Murder: Brutal Assault Leads to Death
2 Jun
Summary
- Victim sustained facial, rib, neck, and brain injuries.
- DNA found on victim's jacket pocket linked to defendant.
- Death resulted from immersion and blunt force trauma.

Darren Round was found dead in canal waters hours after an extensive police investigation pieced together his final movements through CCTV footage. Extensive inquiries and painstaking study of hours of footage allowed police to track Round's key movements. CCTV from canal access points showed no one else entering or leaving during the relevant period.
Williams, for the prosecution, informed the court that Round sustained severe injuries, including facial fractures, broken ribs, a fractured neck bone, and significant brain damage. It is believed Round was likely alive when he entered the water, potentially losing consciousness as he fell. His death was attributed to a combination of drowning and blunt force trauma.
The prosecution alleges Round was subjected to a severe assault involving heavy blows to his face and chest, and extreme pressure to his neck. The defendant was identified via a media appeal in March 2021, and interviewed in June 2021, denying any knowledge of the incident. He later claimed he was elsewhere at the time.
During a subsequent interview in May 2024, the defendant denied ever meeting Round. However, forensic analysis concluded the defendant's DNA was present inside the victim's jacket pocket. It is now understood the defendant accepts an altercation occurred on the canal path and that he struck Round repeatedly. The defense may argue self-defense and dispute the extent of the defendant's role in the injuries or death.
