Killer's Brother Thought Texts Meant Suicide
14 May
Summary
- Brother believed Calocane's messages concerned suicide, not murder.
- Calocane's texts mentioned "red rum" and "hurt permanently."
- Brother unaware of Calocane's schizophrenia diagnosis until October 2023.

The brother of triple killer Valdo Calocane has testified at an inquiry, revealing he believed his sibling's disturbing messages were about self-harm. Elias Calocane told the Nottingham Inquiry that texts mentioning "red rum" and wanting to "hurt permanently" were interpreted as suicidal ideation due to Valdo's perceived anguish and paranoia.
Elias Calocane stated he didn't associate the "red rum" message with murder, viewing it within a religious context of seeking peace. He described Valdo as a calm and peaceful person, unaware of any past violence. The brother only learned of Calocane's paranoid schizophrenia diagnosis in October 2023, unaware a doctor had warned in 2020 that he could kill someone.
The inquiry heard that Elias Calocane had tried to reason with his brother, who believed he was being monitored. He expressed a sense of hopelessness and powerlessness, feeling convinced by July 2021 that the situation "couldn't end well" and that his brother would take his own life.
