Calgary Woman Faces Murder Charge in Mother's Death
31 Jan
Summary
- A Calgary woman is accused of murdering her 83-year-old mother.
- The accused, Tonnya Marisse, is now in a psychiatric hospital.
- Marisse was deemed fit to stand trial despite mental health concerns.
A Calgary woman, Tonnya Marisse, 52, is facing a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the death of her mother, Sharon Roberts, 83. Roberts was found deceased on January 8th. Following an autopsy, her death was officially ruled a homicide. Marisse was arrested on January 9th at a residence approximately 20 kilometers from her mother's home.
Earlier this week, Marisse was transferred from the Calgary Remand Centre to the Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatry Centre. A court appearance on Friday revealed that Marisse has been assessed by a forensic psychiatrist and found fit to stand trial. This means she comprehends the legal proceedings and can communicate with her legal counsel. Despite this finding, she is currently being held at the psychiatric centre under a mental health warrant.
