A chaotic scene unfolded in Calgary on Monday when a traffic stop devolved into a violent confrontation. The incident began around 11:45 a.m. when an officer was shot twice by a suspect who then fled into Edworthy Park.
Scores of officers, supported by a police helicopter, pursued the suspect through the park while he discharged rounds at them. The suspect also carjacked a Canadian Pacific Kansas City Railway vehicle before abandoning it.
The suspect was ultimately discovered deceased in the Bow River, having sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The injured officer, whose identity has not been released, is in stable condition and expected to fully recover. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is now investigating the events.
