Mark Hehir, a 62-year-old bus driver, was dismissed by Metroline in November following an incident in June 2024 where he punched a thief who had stolen a necklace from a passenger. The incident occurred on the 206 bus route in North West London. CCTV footage showed the thief initiating the physical confrontation with Hehir.
Following his dismissal, over 100,000 people signed a petition supporting Hehir's reinstatement, with prominent politicians calling the sacking "shameful and unjust." Hehir himself has stated he does not wish to return to his job but is seeking an apology and compensation for lost earnings from Metroline, believing the company made an error in judgment.
Hehir, originally from Ireland, spent six days in hospital and underwent two operations on his hand due to a severe infection from the thief's tooth, a condition that nearly led to the loss of his hand. Despite the public outcry and support, an employment tribunal upheld the company's decision to dismiss him, stating his use of force was excessive.
