Jail Salmonella Outbreak: 300+ Inmates Infected
5 Jun
Summary
- Over 320 inmates at Broome County jail were infected by salmonella.
- Critical food preparation violations by the vendor are under investigation.
- A class action lawsuit has been filed against the sheriff and county.

An investigation by the Broome County Health Department has linked a significant salmonella outbreak to violations by the jail's food vendor. Over 320 inmates contracted salmonella, with some requiring hospitalization, following the consumption of contaminated chicken salad. The health department identified six critical violations by Trinity Food Groups, including improper refrigeration and inadequate cooking temperatures for chicken, as well as bare-hand handling of food.
These findings have led to immediate correction orders for the jail's kitchen practices. In response to the crisis, Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar has deemed the vendor's actions unacceptable and is exploring legal action and a potential change in food vendors. A class action lawsuit has been filed by inmates and their families alleging negligence and breach of duty regarding food safety and inmate welfare.
