Brooklyn Mom Gets 20 Years for Tragic Drowning Deaths

Erin Merdy, 34, has received a decades-long prison sentence for the 2022 deaths of her three young children. Merdy pleaded guilty earlier this year to charges of first-degree murder in connection with the drownings. The devastating incident occurred in September 2022, when her children, Zachary (7), Liliana (4), and Oliver (3 months), were found deceased. The city medical examiner ruled their deaths homicides caused by drowning.

Merdy was sentenced on Wednesday after a relative alerted authorities out of concern for the children's safety. Prosecutors stated that Merdy was observed walking toward the ocean with the children before the tragic events. She was later found barefoot and wet about two miles from where the children's bodies were recovered near the Coney Island boardwalk. The Brooklyn District Attorney's office emphasized the pursuit of maximum accountability in this heartbreaking case.
