Mom Found Not Guilty by Insanity in Children's Deaths
29 Aug
Summary
- Mother of two found not guilty by reason of insanity in 2022 child deaths.
- Severe mental illness and psychosis were cited as reasons for the ruling.
- The case draws parallels to the ongoing deliberations in the Lindsay Clancy trial.

In a Bronx courtroom, a mother of two, Dimone Fleming, 26, was declared not guilty by reason of insanity for the 2022 deaths of her son, Daishawn Fleming, and infant Octavius Canada. The ruling acknowledged that Fleming was suffering from severe mental illness, including psychosis, at the time of the tragic events.
Fleming experienced hallucinations and believed a spirit had invaded her body, according to expert testimony. Her defense stated she believed her actions were necessary to protect her children. Court records indicate she had a history of major depressive disorder but did not consistently take prescribed medication, reportedly worsening her condition with daily marijuana use.
The children were found with multiple stab wounds in a bathtub on November 26, 2022. Fleming, initially behaving irrationally, was taken for evaluation. This case is drawing comparisons to the ongoing trial of Lindsay Clancy in Massachusetts, who is accused of killing her three children in January 2023, with her defense also citing postpartum psychosis.
Fleming remains in custody pending a psychiatric evaluation to determine if she poses a threat to others. She is due back in court on September 18. The father of one of the children, Columbus Canada, expressed forgiveness, calling Fleming a good person and loving mother.
