Bronx Wellness Clinic Director Charged with Murder in Patient's Death
7 Oct
Summary
- Woman died from an embolism after receiving an IV longevity supplement.
- Clinic director faces second-degree murder charges for the incident.
- The drug administered, NAD+, is largely unregulated and unproven in humans.
A 27-year-old woman, Elizabeth Baron, died in July after receiving an intravenous longevity supplement at a Bronx wellness clinic. The clinic's director, Luis Rojas Cabrera, administered the drug, after which Ms. Baron lost consciousness and later died from an embolism.
Prosecutors have charged Mr. Cabrera, who reportedly lacks a New York doctor's license, with second-degree murder. The city medical examiner ruled the death a homicide caused by air entering the intravenous catheter and traveling to her heart. This ruling allowed for the murder indictment.
Mr. Cabrera, who operates the Bereshit Lifestyle Center, advertises alternative treatments. He claims to have a doctor's license in the Dominican Republic. The drug given, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), is a popular longevity supplement that is largely unregulated and unproven in humans.
Mr. Cabrera pleaded not guilty to the charges. His defense attorney argued that Cabrera attempted to revive Ms. Baron and called 911, indicating he did not lack concern for her life.
