Boy, 13, Dies Protecting Mom in Portugal Stabbing

A 13-year-old British boy, Alfie Hallett, has died after being stabbed in an apartment near Tomar, Portugal. His grandmother believes he was killed trying to protect his mother from her former partner. The mother sustained injuries and was found bound; neighbors had heard arguments at the property.

The assailant, identified locally as Goncalo Carvalho, a man with a previous conviction for homicide, died in a gas explosion at the residence as police were attempting to arrest him. He was later found with suspected self-inflicted knife wounds. Alfie and his mother had previously reported domestic violence incidents to the authorities.

Alfie, who was born in Brighton and raised in Bognor Regis, had moved to Portugal with his mother in 2016. Despite his father's attempts to maintain contact, they had lost touch in recent years.
