An inquest has revealed that Jo Shaw, 35, tragically died from penetrating fragmentation blast injuries following a deliberate house explosion in Bristol on May 3. The incident occurred in Sterncourt Road, where her former partner, Ryan Kelly, also sustained fatal injuries.
Less than 20 minutes before the explosion, police received a call from the property reporting a domestic incident. Neighbours reported hearing an argument and that Kelly had brought what was described as a "grenade" to the address. Ms Shaw's family emphasized her bravery and protective instincts, stating she acted heroically.
Assistant Avon coroner Debbie Rookes opened the inquest, noting Ms Shaw was formally identified by her family. The investigation is being treated as a homicide, and police confirmed they are not searching for any other individuals in connection with the event. Three others, including a child, suffered minor injuries.
The inquest proceedings were adjourned, with further reports requested from various services, including the police and pathologist. A review is scheduled for July 20, with a full inquest hearing provisionally set for August 11, 2026. Ms Shaw is remembered by her family for her warmth, kindness, and strength, and as a devoted mother.
