10 Sep
Summary
- Driver fled a traffic stop near a high school.
- Nearly struck two crossing guards during the pursuit.
- Arrested after a chase involving car and foot pursuit.
A traffic stop near Brick Memorial High School escalated dramatically Tuesday morning when a local man allegedly fled from an officer. Corey Goodwin, 38, of Brick, was initially stopped for traffic violations during student drop-off. Instead of complying, Goodwin accelerated his vehicle, driving at high speeds and on the wrong side of the road.
During his escape, Goodwin narrowly missed striking two uniformed school crossing guards. The pursuit continued until Goodwin abandoned his vehicle at a residence and fled on foot. Responding officers pursued him through residential areas, eventually apprehending him after he crossed a creek.
Goodwin is now facing serious charges, including eluding police and aggravated assault. The incident occurred amid heightened awareness of traffic safety, particularly around school zones, following a recent fatal crash involving a bicyclist. Goodwin was transported to Ocean County Jail.
