A 36-year-old social media influencer and former beauty queen from Sao Paulo, Sara Monteiro, was arrested on Wednesday as part of a large-scale police operation dubbed "Operation Luxury." This sting targeted a drug syndicate reportedly headed by her husband. Monteiro, who frequently showcased a lifestyle of luxury vacations and parties to over 107,000 followers, was found to have an "economically incompatible" existence, according to police.
Investigators believe Monteiro was involved in laundering money for a Brazilian marijuana trafficking group, allegedly profiting from illicit activities. She was identified after being spotted near a rural house used as a transport base for illegal substances. The charges against her include money laundering, drug trafficking, and organized crime involvement.
The operation has resulted in 24 arrests and the seizure of 5.9 tonnes of marijuana and 20 luxury vehicles. Her husband is accused of moving over R$11 million (approximately £1.6 million) in unexplained transactions. The syndicate is believed to have been operating for at least 18 months.
