A nursing technician at a maternity hospital in Teresina, Brazil, has been arrested for allegedly attempting to kidnap a newborn. The suspect, Auricelia de Sousa Rocha, had reportedly been on medical leave but returned to the ward wearing scrubs.
According to the baby's aunt, Rocha approached the mother shortly after birth, claiming the baby needed a test. The aunt was then led away, and Rocha allegedly attempted to leave with the infant concealed in a large black bag. Hospital CCTV footage appeared to corroborate this account, showing a woman with a bag and the baby.
Upon searching the suspect's home, police discovered a room equipped with baby clothes, a crib, and a bathtub. Rocha had allegedly misled her family about being pregnant. Her defense has cited a diagnosis of schizophrenia, but authorities indicated they would still hold her responsible for the alleged crime.
