In a significant crackdown, Bokaro police have dismantled an extortion racket operating in the Balidih area. Seven suspected members of the gang were apprehended on Thursday.
The apprehended individuals targeted local businessmen, issuing threats and demanding money by falsely invoking the names of notorious criminals and gangs. This tactic was employed to instill fear and coerce victims into paying.
During the police operation, which was based on intelligence reports and technical inputs, several items including weapons, mobile phones, and sim cards were seized. The gang's alleged kingpin, Prince Kumar Gupta, was injured during an attempt to resist arrest and open fire on the police team. Gupta, who has a prior criminal record with approximately 10 cases against him, was subsequently taken into custody.
Further investigations indicated that Gupta and his associates gathered contact information of traders. This data was then passed to other accomplices who made the extortion calls, posing as members of influential criminal groups.
