23 Jan
Summary
- Accused driver allegedly took victim to a distant hospital, delaying care.
- Victim, a finance ministry official, died from massive blood loss after accident.
- Court took cognisance of charges including culpable homicide and rash driving.

A Delhi court has taken cognisance of charges filed against Gaganpreet Makkad, accused of causing the death of Navjot Singh, a 52-year-old finance ministry official. The incident occurred last September when Makkad's speeding BMW allegedly struck Singh's motorcycle. Police submissions to the court revealed that Makkad deliberately transported the critically injured Singh to a hospital significantly farther from the accident site than available closer facilities.
This alleged delay in critical medical attention, during what is termed the 'golden hour' for trauma care, is central to the charges. The postmortem report indicated the victim could have survived for 5-15 minutes post-accident, but suffered massive blood loss. The court is now proceeding with charges including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash driving, and endangering life under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
