A blackbuck, a Schedule I protected species, was discovered tied up at the residence of a daily-wage forest department worker in Shivapur, near the Gautala Autramghat wildlife sanctuary. Authorities are investigating the possibility that the animal was being kept for illegal sale and probing potential connections to higher-ranking department officials.
The rescued blackbuck is currently safe and under the department's supervision. An official stated that a case has been filed under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. A joint team raided the worker's home on September 18 and is continuing efforts to uncover the intended sale destination.
This incident is the third significant wildlife-related case near the sanctuary in the past two weeks, following cases of alleged illegal felling of 57 anjan trees and sandalwood smuggling. Activists have called for a thorough investigation into the blackbuck's origins, transportation, and intended buyers, emphasizing the need to halt illegal activities within the region.
