A jury in California has determined that Bill Cosby must pay $19.25 million in damages to Donna Motsinger, a former waitress. The ruling found Cosby liable for drugging and sexually assaulting Ms. Motsinger over five decades ago, specifically in 1972.
Ms. Motsinger, now 84, alleged that Cosby provided her with wine and a pill that rendered her incapacitated after picking her up at her Sausalito home. She stated that she woke up naked and realized she had been raped.
Cosby, aged 88, has consistently denied all allegations of sexual assault leveled against him by numerous women. His legal team has indicated that they will appeal the recent verdict.
This civil judgment comes after Cosby's release from prison in Pennsylvania in 2021, when his previous sex assault conviction was vacated on a technicality. The jury may still award further punitive damages in the Santa Monica case.
