Summary
- Vikas Dubey's aide Hiru Dubey was released from jail on bail.
- He was sentenced to 10 years under the Gangsters Act.
- Hiru surrendered in August 2020 after absconding.
Dhirendra alias Hiru Dubey, a close confidant of the late gangster Vikas Dubey, was released from Kanpur Dehat district jail on Friday evening. This follows his bail granted by the Supreme Court in an appeal against a 10-year sentence under the Gangsters Act, related to the infamous Bikru incident. Hiru had spent approximately six years incarcerated.
Investigators identified Hiru as a key associate involved in the conspiracy and the Bikru incident. He allegedly participated actively in local governance and panchayat meetings. Hiru became a wanted figure, with a reward of Rs 1 lakh announced for his capture, after absconding when police intensified actions against Dubey's associates.
He ultimately surrendered at Mati court in August 2020, after an initial attempt by the STF was met with opposition. Hiru faced multiple charges, including murder and illegal arms possession. Out of thirty accused in the Gangsters Act case, twenty-three, including Hiru, received 10-year sentences, while seven were acquitted.
Upon his release, Hiru stated his belief in the judicial system and commented that "whatever happened was wrong." His legal counsel, Ashwini Tripathi, indicated that the defense had identified case flaws and would respect future judicial decisions.
