Bihar Marriage Scammers Nabbed After Targeting Rajasthan Men

3 Jan

•

Summary

  • Five individuals, including three women, were arrested for orchestrating marriage fraud.
  • The gang targeted older men from outside Bihar struggling to find marriage partners.
  • Victims were defrauded of cash and gold jewelry, with two Rajasthan men losing approximately Rs 1.40 lakh each.

In a recent crackdown, police in Bihar's Rohtas district apprehended five individuals, three of them women, for their involvement in a marriage fraud racket. The arrests occurred in various villages within the district, and the accused were subsequently placed in judicial custody on Saturday. Authorities also seized Rs 1.32 lakh in cash, gold jewelry, and mobile phones from the suspects.

The fraudulent operation specifically targeted older men from outside the state, particularly those facing challenges in securing marriage partners. The gang would arrange a sham marriage, often with one of the female members posing as the bride, collect substantial payments under the guise of wedding expenses, and then disappear. This modus operandi has led to at least two reported cases from Rajasthan.

Two men from Rajasthan, Manoj Soni and Harchand Ram, were victims of this scheme, collectively losing close to Rs 4.40 lakh and valuable gold ornaments. The first incident involved Manoj Soni, who married Jaya Kumari Patel on January 2, believing her to be from Gori village, only to discover he had been defrauded. Harchand Ram had previously reported a similar fraud on December 30.
