A chilling murder mystery has emerged in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district, stemming from a missing-person case that has now escalated to suspected honor killing. Gaurishankar Kumar's relentless public appeals on social media compelled authorities to investigate the disappearance of his wife, 19-year-old Sujata Kumari.
Police allege that Sujata was strangled to death by her own family members on May 8, approximately two months before the current date, for marrying outside her caste. Her body was reportedly burned on the banks of the Budhi Gandak river in a bid to eliminate evidence.
The couple, who had known each other since childhood, married in January this year after eloping due to family opposition. Despite Sujata asserting her adult status and marriage choice in court in February, she later returned to her parental home and vanished after a final conversation with her husband on March 31.
Gaurishankar's persistent efforts, including a threat to self-harm, galvanized the police into forming a special investigation team. The investigation has led to the confession of Sujata's brother, Abhishek Kumar, who reportedly cited fear of Sujata returning to her husband as a motive. More than five family members are suspected to be involved, and efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining individuals.
