A tragic incident in Bathinda saw a 32-year-old trader, Sandeep Kumar, allegedly die by suicide on Friday. Prior to his death, Kumar recorded a video implicating Raman Jain, his wife Renu Bala, their relative advocate Charanpal Brar, DSP Amritpal Singh Bhaati, and Bhaati's reader. He cited overwhelming pressure to return approximately Rs 8 lakh paid for construction materials into his wife's account as the reason for his extreme step.
Following protests by the victim's family, Bathinda police arrested Renu Bala, the reader to a district court judge, and her husband Raman Jain on Saturday. They face charges of criminal conspiracy and abetment of suicide under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. An independent inquiry has been initiated to investigate the allegations made against DSP Amritpal Singh Bhaati, who was also named by the deceased.
Kumar's brother, Manish Kumar, stated that Sandeep had been distressed for over a month due to the alleged harassment. The trader had previously lodged a complaint with the DSP's office, claiming he faced further harassment and demands for money from the staff there, which contributed to his despair.
