A 26-month-old murder investigation in Bareilly has concluded with the arrest of Mahendra Singh, aged 37. Police reported on October 3, 2026, that Singh allegedly murdered his 55-year-old mother, Rambeti, on August 7, 2024, while she slept in his home in Kudda village.
Singh initially filed a report accusing six relatives of the murder. However, an investigation by a Special Investigation Team found no evidence against the named relatives. Their polygraph tests also yielded no incriminating results.
Further investigation, including expert analysis of the victim's viscera, revealed that Rambeti's time of death did not align with Mahendra's statement. Confronted with this evidence, Singh reportedly confessed.
He allegedly admitted to killing his mother as part of a revenge scheme stemming from a land and family dispute with his cousins. Singh, who has a history of five previous cases, was taken into custody, while the wrongly accused relatives were released. The charge sheet is pending.
