As part of the inquiry, the cargo ship Fitburg was seized on December 31, 2025, while traveling from Russia to Israel. This ship is suspected of causing damage to cables that run from Helsinki, Finland, across the Gulf of Finland to Estonia. The police statement indicated that three of the four suspects currently face a travel ban.
This incident occurs amid heightened alert in the Baltic Sea region following a series of infrastructure outages since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. NATO has increased its military presence in the area in response to these security concerns.
