A Romanian national, Flaviu Naghi, 34, has appeared before Swansea Crown Court, pleading not guilty to charges related to the death of six-month-old Sophia Kelemen. Naghi denies causing Sophia's death by dangerous driving and by careless driving while under the influence of drugs. The tragic incident occurred on January 2, 2025, when a car collided with the baby's pram in a multi-storey car park in Tenby, Pembrokeshire.
Sophia was airlifted to the University Hospital of Wales with a broken pelvis and a brain bleed. Despite emergency treatment, she passed away a day later due to an intracranial haemorrhage. Naghi, from Luton, Bedfordshire, was reportedly on a New Year's break with his wife and the baby's parents, Alex and Betty Keleman, at the time of the incident. The driver was a close friend of the baby's parents.
The trial has been adjourned until 12:30pm tomorrow, with the proceedings expected to last three days. Naghi was released on bail. A GoFundMe page has been established to help Sophia's family with funeral costs and repatriation, a devastating event that occurred unexpectedly after the Christmas holidays.
