- The family was reportedly targeted for refusing to pay a temple entry fee.

Tragedy struck during the Kummera jatara in Nagarkurnool, Telangana, where a two-month-old baby died after her family was allegedly assaulted by a group of upper caste men. The family, from Kummera village and belonging to the Chakali community, reported being targeted when they refused to pay a Rs 100 entry fee to the temple, an act they found unusual as entry is typically free.
According to the complaint, the attackers used casteist slurs and physically assaulted the family. The infant reportedly sustained fatal injuries when her mother placed her at the accused's feet, pleading for mercy. The baby succumbed to her injuries on February 21, three days after the incident on February 18.
Protests were staged demanding justice for the child. Police confirmed that an FIR was registered, and three arrests have been made. The case has been registered under relevant sections of the BNS and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, as it came to light that the victim's daughter-in-law belongs to the SC community. A post-mortem examination was conducted, and further investigation is pending the report. A counter-case has also been filed by the opposing party.
