A three-month-old baby boy tragically died in hospital after sustaining a catastrophic brain injury. Prosecutors allege Bradley Thomas, 23, subjected the infant to excessive and vigorous shaking in the Eston area in the early hours of October 5, last year. The court heard that paramedics found the child deeply unconscious.
Medical opinion suggested the injuries resulted from an episode of forceful shaking. Thomas, who denies murder, claimed he fell asleep while the baby was on his knees and woke to find the child on the floor. However, the prosecution argued such a fall could not have caused the severity of the injuries observed.
Specialists told the jury that similar injuries could be seen in severe accidental head trauma, comparable to incidents like fatal car crashes or falls from significant heights. Thomas was initially arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, during which he reportedly shouted he did not harm the boy. He maintained in police interviews that he was too tired to have shaken the child.
