Two inter-district burglars were arrested in the Kaptanganj area of Azamgarh district late on Sunday after a police encounter. While on patrol, police received information about the suspects traveling in an auto-rickshaw. When officers attempted to stop their vehicle, the individuals opened fire, leading to retaliatory shots from the police. Both suspects sustained bullet injuries to their legs and were subsequently taken for medical treatment before being arrested.

The arrested individuals, identified as Dinesh alias Lucky alias Budhwa (34) and Deepak alias Devdutt Gaur (29), are residents of the Kotwali police station area. Police reports indicate that multiple cases, including theft, Arms Act violations, and Gangster Act charges, were registered against them across Azamgarh, Mau, and Ghazipur districts. During interrogation, they confessed to involvement in six theft incidents within Kaptanganj, Kandharapur, and Jiyanpur police station jurisdictions.

Authorities recovered two country-made pistols, live and empty cartridges, gold and silver jewelry valued at approximately Rs 6 lakh, Rs 7,500 in cash, a mobile phone, an LCD TV, and the auto-rickshaw used by the burglars. The duo reportedly used the auto-rickshaw to scout locked houses for nighttime break-ins and carried illegal weapons for intimidation. Legal proceedings under the relevant provisions of the BNS and Arms Act are now underway.
