A 19-year-old Athens man, Tydarius Wingfield, has been charged with rape and other serious offenses following an incident early Saturday morning. Police report that Wingfield offered to walk a University of Georgia student home, but then forced her behind a building on Thomas Street where he sexually assaulted her.
The Athens-Clarke County Police Department used their Real Time Crime Center's downtown camera system to monitor the incident and track Wingfield's movements. This technology was instrumental in positively identifying the suspect.
Wingfield faces charges including kidnapping, aggravated sexual battery, battery, and rape. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are seeking information from the public.
