1 Apr
Summary
- Man died of asbestos-related cancer weeks before court ruling.
- Two former employers found negligent in exposing him to asbestos.
- Compensation proceedings for his family are currently underway.

A man succumbed to asbestos-related lung cancer mere weeks before his former employers were legally declared negligent for his exposure. John Reid, aged 53, was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2024 and died in March. His legal case against MCM Building & Engineering and Pyramid Joinery alleged that their substandard health and safety practices led to his contracting the fatal illness.
Lord Harrower found both companies liable, assigning 99.908% of the fault to Pyramid Joinery due to prolonged exposure and 0.092% to MCM. Reid had been exposed to asbestos fibres while working as a labourer between 1999 and 2003 for both companies, which involved removing asbestos roofing and sorting waste materials. He claimed no protective gear or training was provided.
Reid's solicitor highlighted the bittersweet nature of the ruling, acknowledging that while justice was served regarding the cause of his illness, Mr. Reid did not live to see it. His determination to fight for his family and to help future asbestos sufferers was noted. Scotland has historically high rates of asbestos-related diseases, partly due to its use in shipbuilding and heavy engineering.
