Summary
- Police will carry long-arm rifles at the final Ashes Test in Sydney.
- The measure aims to help the public feel safe after the Bondi attack.
- Israel offered training to Australian police on countering terrorism.

Police in New South Wales will carry long-arm rifles at the Sydney Cricket Ground during the final Ashes Test, beginning on Sunday. This decision follows similar security measures implemented at recent major events, including the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne and Sydney's New Year's Eve celebrations.
NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon stated the deployment is intended to help the public feel safe, clarifying it is not due to any specific active or imminent threat. This comes in the wake of the Bondi terror attack on December 14, which claimed 15 lives and has prompted discussions about security protocols at public gatherings.
In response to the attack, Israel has offered to share its counter-terrorism and antisemitism expertise with Australian police. The Australian government confirmed receipt of the offer, while also highlighting existing actions against hate speech and crimes. State premier Chris Minns is also considering requesting Australian Defence Force troops for Jewish site protection and potentially expanding weapons access for community security groups.
