Men Detained in Guthrie Search Sue Sheriff

A notice of claim has been filed against Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos and a detective by lawyers representing two men detained during the search for Nancy Guthrie. The claim, a precursor to a potential lawsuit, asserts wrongful arrest and property damage.

Carlos Palazuelos, detained on February 10 for questioning and later released without charges, alleges he was arrested at gunpoint and held for hours without probable cause. His home was reportedly "ransacked," and he claims significant physical, emotional, and reputational harm. The notice also points to social media posts by Sheriff Nanos that allegedly portrayed Palazuelos as a suspect.

Daniel Maddox was also detained at his home on February 10, held in handcuffs for several hours. The notice states he was confronted at gunpoint by deputies. His mother, Josefina Maddox, who owns the home, is also named, alleging property damage. The lawyers have proposed settlements totaling $2.5 million for Palazuelos, $500,000 for Daniel Maddox, and $250,000 for Josefina Maddox.

Nancy Guthrie, 84, went missing from her home near Tucson early February 1 and her disappearance is being investigated as a kidnapping for ransom. The sheriff's office stated that the analysis of DNA and digital evidence is complex and time-intensive, with investigators pursuing all credible leads. Savannah Guthrie released a video plea for answers, expressing her family's agony.
