- Gray sought infamy, not hate, aiming for fame in the True Crime Community.
- He idolized mass shooter Nikolas Cruz and craved media attention.

Colt Gray, 16, received a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole for the mass shooting at Apalachee High School on September 4, 2024. The Barrow County Superior Court judge deemed the act "deliberate, contemplated, evil." Gray pleaded guilty to 55 counts, including four life sentences for the deaths of two students and two teachers, and additional years for other related offenses.
The court heard that Gray, then 14, planned and executed the killings for notoriety, not out of malice. Prosecutors presented evidence that Gray's ultimate goal was to gain fame within the online "True Crime Community" and that he emulated other mass shooters.
During recorded calls, Gray expressed his desire for infamy and discussed his ranking among mass shooters, even requesting his mother inquire about a potential documentary. He idolized Nikolas Cruz and created a shrine to him. His defense cited family struggles including substance abuse and domestic violence.
Gray's grandmother testified about the family's difficulties and a missed mental health appointment prior to the shooting. Despite assurances, Gray was not taken to the clinic. He brought an assault rifle to school, leading to the tragic events and subsequent sentencing.
