Former Anchor Deemed Unfit to Stand Trial for Mother's Stabbing

A former news anchor and reporter, Angelynn Mock, has been declared mentally unfit to stand trial for the alleged stabbing death of her mother, Anita Avers. The incident occurred on October 31, 2025, at their shared Wichita, Kansas residence. Mock was charged with first-degree murder following the fatal stabbing of her 80-year-old mother.

A competency evaluation submitted to the court on January 15, 2026, concluded that Mock is not currently competent. Based on these findings, the court has ordered her to Larned State Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Legal proceedings in the district court have been temporarily halted. According to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office, a finding of incompetence does not result in the dismissal of charges or the defendant's release. Criminal proceedings will resume once Mock is deemed competent.

Officers responded to the home on October 31, 2025, after Mock called 911, stating her mother had tried to kill her. Upon arrival, officers found Mock with injuries and her mother deceased with multiple stab wounds. Evidence at the scene included knives and a cheese grater with blood.

Mock reportedly told authorities her mother was sharpening knives and then chased her. She made conflicting statements about who initiated the stabbing, ultimately stating she had to stab her mother to save herself. She had previously been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, later revised to schizoaffective disorder, and her husband noted past statements suggesting delusion.

After receiving treatment for her own injuries, Mock was taken into custody. During questioning, she made statements indicating a belief that her mother was the devil.
