Allahabad High Court Appoints Record 24 Judges, Reducing Vacancies
27 Sep, 2025
Summary
- Allahabad High Court appoints 24 new judges
- Vacancies reduced from 74 to 50 out of 160 total positions
- 10 advocates elevated, 14 judicial officers promoted

On September 27, 2025, the Indian law ministry notified the appointment of a record 24 new judges to the Allahabad High Court, the country's largest high court. This move has significantly reduced the court's vacancies, bringing them down from 74 to 50 out of a total sanctioned strength of 160 judges.
Of the 24 new appointees, 10 are advocates who have been elevated to the bench, while 14 are judicial officers who have been promoted. The new judges include Vivek Saran, Vivek Kumar Singh, Garima Prashad, and several others.
In addition to the Allahabad High Court, the law ministry also notified the appointment of two judges for the Himachal Pradesh High Court and three for the Karnataka High Court, among a total of 29 new judges across the country.
The move is part of a broader effort to address the high number of vacancies in India's high courts, which currently stand at 330 out of a total sanctioned strength of 1,122 judges. While many high court collegiums have not recommended names for over 200 of these vacancies, the central government is working to fill the positions and strengthen the judiciary.
