On October 4, 2025, the remains of an Alabama woman in her late 60s were discovered at her home in the small town of Remlap. According to the Blount County Sheriff's Office, the woman, identified as Rita Thomas, is believed to have died of natural causes, with her body found outside her home, potentially on the exterior stairs.
Investigators suspect that Thomas may have experienced a medical event that led to her death, and her two dogs, as well as a cat, have since been euthanized due to the biohazard of consuming human remains. The woman's cat, which was found inside the home, was also euthanized after being discovered lethargic and malnourished.
The incident is currently under investigation, and authorities have reported that the woman's body was also suspected to have been eaten by other wild animals while it was in the yard. Neighbors had not seen the woman for weeks, and her mailbox was full, prompting the welfare check that led to the grim discovery.
