An Alabama woman, Loretta Kay Carr, has received a life sentence for her role in the murder of Mary Elizabeth Isbell. Carr, 46, conspired with her 24-year-old daughter, Jessie Kelly, to kill 38-year-old Isbell. The victim was last seen in late 2021.
Isbell was reportedly confronted by Carr and Kelly at her home on October 18, 2021, due to a relationship with Carr's boyfriend. Authorities discovered signs of a struggle at Isbell's residence. Carr and Kelly then forcibly took Isbell to Wolf Creek Overlook in Little River Canyon National Preserve.
At the overlook, Carr tied herself to a barrier, forced Isbell over, and pushed her off the cliff. Isbell was reported missing in December 2021, and her remains were found in June 2023. Carr pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and kidnapping, while Kelly pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 40 years.
Investigators described the crime as one of the most heinous they had encountered. The district attorney highlighted the devastating impact on Isbell's family, emphasizing the senseless destruction of lives. Carr is currently held at DeKalb County Jail.
