The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has stated it will 'teach a lesson to the police' following the custodial death of Ajith Kumar, a temple security guard. The court noted that Kumar was allegedly beaten to death over a false jewellery theft complaint, refusing bail to five arrested special police team members.
The CBI confirmed Kumar's death as a custodial killing, having closed the theft complaint against him as baseless. A post-mortem examination documented approximately 40 injuries on his body, substantiating claims of severe physical abuse.
Justice Sreemathi expressed anguish, questioning the complainant's actions and the basis of the initial assault. The accused policemen are to remain in custody until the trial concludes, with the hearing adjourned to February 17. At least ten officials, including senior ranks, face cases in connection with the incident.
The High Court had previously ordered interim compensation of ₹25 lakh to the victim's family. The Chief Minister had transferred the investigation to the CBI and publicly apologized to the family.
