A lawsuit has been filed by the families of two victims following a fatal shooting at an Airbnb rental property in Bath Township, Ohio. The incident occurred around midnight on November 2, 2025, during a large birthday party estimated to have attracted between 250 to 300 attendees. Seven individuals were shot, and three others sustained injuries in the event, which was reportedly promoted via social media.
Elijah Wells, 18, of Akron, died from his injuries several days after the shooting. The lawsuit names the property owner, Airbnb, party organizers, and three suspects involved. Allegations include that Airbnb, the homeowner, and organizers disregarded Bath Township's ban on short-term rentals, though these claims are yet to be determined in court.
In response to the incident, Airbnb has reinforced its community policy banning open parties and disruptive behavior, and has suspended the property's listing. Short-term rental owners are advised to be aware of local ordinances, set clear guest limits, and promptly address neighbor complaints to avoid more significant issues.
Two adult suspects, Derquan Edwards and Jashawn Stewart, have been indicted on multiple charges and are slated for trial on January 11, 2027. A 16-year-old also faces juvenile charges related to the shooting. The case underscores the challenges and liabilities associated with managing short-term rental properties.
