Kamal Slams Verdict: 'Disappointing' 20-Year Sentence in Actress Case
13 Dec
Summary
- Six individuals received 20-year sentences in the 2017 actress assault case.
- Director Kamal found the verdict disappointing, expecting life imprisonment.
- The Kerala government will review the judgment for further action.

The Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court has sentenced six individuals to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment in the 2017 actress assault case. This verdict has drawn criticism from Director Kamal, who described it as "disappointing" and stated that life imprisonment was anticipated. The court found the accused guilty of serious charges including kidnapping with intent to rape and gang rape.
The sentencing includes a Rs 50,000 fine for each convict, with an additional year of imprisonment for non-payment. Notably, Malayalam actor Dileep, initially the eighth accused, was acquitted by the court. The case stems from the alleged abduction and molestation of an actress inside her car on February 17, 2017.
In response to the outcome, Kerala Cultural Minister Saji Cheriyan indicated that the government intends to review the verdict thoroughly. He emphasized that while the court's decision cannot be commented on without detailed study, the government will take necessary action to ensure maximum punishment and clarity regarding those involved in the conspiracy, especially since the perceived maximum justice was not achieved.
