A Bangladeshi national, Shariful Islam, accused of a home invasion and assault on actor Saif Ali Khan, has moved sessions court to plead guilty. The 31-year-old faces charges for armed robbery with the intent to cause death or grievous hurt, alongside violations of the Foreigners Act and Passport (Entry into India) Act for illegal entry and stay.
Islam's application for a guilty plea aims to secure leniency in sentencing, foregoing a trial. The court has requested the prosecution's response, with the matter scheduled for a hearing on September 11. Previously, Islam allegedly surveilled Bandra and Khar areas before taking a hotel job near Khan's residence.
Following a dispute, he quit and on January 16, 2025, allegedly attempted a burglary at Khan's home, resulting in an assault. Arrested on January 19, 2025, Islam is accused of grievously injuring Khan, his employee, and another witness. Forensic evidence, including bloodstains and fingerprint matches, links him to the crime scene. He also allegedly demonstrated the elaborate method he used to access the fourth-floor flat.
