Mangione and his expat friends were allegedly presented with an inflated bill of 50,000 Thai Baht, or around $1,500, after just a few drinks. When they refused to pay, they were set upon by as many as seven "ladyboys" - a colloquial term for Bangkok's transgender women.
Mangione survived the scuffle, emerging with bloody scratches, and later bragged about the "f***ing nuts story" to a friend he had met while traveling. The friend, who did not witness the incident firsthand, provided text messages and photos as proof of the encounter.

Just months after this incident, in December 2024, Mangione was accused of stalking and murdering 50-year-old UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on a busy Manhattan sidewalk. Prosecutors allege Mangione was motivated by a vendetta against the healthcare industry.
The new book provides a glimpse into Mangione's life in the months leading up to the alleged murder, painting a picture of a restless backpacker who embraced the seedier side of Bangkok's nightlife before his dramatic transformation.
